In partnership with ING DIRECT, Tech Impact’s PC Donations Program provides computers, free of charge, to nonprofits.
Challenge
Latin American Community Center has hundreds of children in their care on a daily basis. In an effort to increase technical knowledge and nuture our future, LACC yearned to initiate a computer education program. However, crucial elements were missing from the class.
The executive director of the LACC, Maria Matos explains, “It’s not that the parents don’t want to give things to buy things for their children…they just can’t. They have to make a choice between buying food, paying rent, and computers?”
Solution
Tech Impact reached out to their sponsors, including Independence Blue Cross, Arkema, and Reed Technology in order to secure recycled computers. ING DIRECT agreed to refurbish the machines so that they could be fully utilized by The Latin American Community Center’s new venture.
Impact
The Latin American Community Center’s Youth Computer Technology Program received 20 donated PCs through this program. The LACC’s after-school enrichment program offers Computer Technology, which teaches young people, ages 13 to 17, how to disassemble and re-assemble PC’s, and install operating system and other software. Participants are given the completed computers to take home. This program helps to stimulate their interest in technology and can improve their home learning environment, benefiting their families and the community as well.
Steve Villanueva, the IT Director of The Latin American Community Center, says it best, “It just goes to show that one little thing that we expose kids to can be their entire future.”
