Alyssa Weker's Return to the Nonprofit World
Alyssa Weker stumbled across Tech Impact through a Google search of Philadelphia non-profit jobs in the area. Recently a Corporate Recruiter for a construction company, she wasn’t having any luck finding work in talent acquisition. As frustration grew, she remembered her time at a nonprofit earlier in her career that helped with securing education access for young adults and pivoted her job search to return to the sector.
“When I found the job at Tech Impact, I liked the thought of working with young adults and being their coach and mentor, so I instantly applied,” says Alyssa. She felt she aligned with the mission of leveraging technology to advance social impact and wanted to help young adults navigate their new career paths in the IT field. With relevant experience and a great culture fit, Alyssa was offered a role and joined the Tech Impact team in the spring of 2024. Starting off as Tech Impact’s Workforce Program Admissions & Recruitment Coordinator, Alyssa’s supervisors quickly noted her expertise, work ethic, and skills and promoted her to Career Development Specialist within the first few weeks of her joining the organization. In her new role, she supports students in securing internships and full-time employment. She also works on supporting the robust alumni network that the Programs team has built by compiling and sharing valuable career resources, assisting alumni with job opportunities and openings, and networking with local companies to share the value in hiring graduates from Tech Impact’s workforce development programs. “My favorite part of this role is working with the students and hearing about their experiences on how our programs helped them change their life. The reward behind helping them find their new roles and being a small part of their journey is immeasurable.” Alyssa expanded on her excitement sharing she enjoys being their cheerleader and their support system during and after the program.
As for her favorite part about working at Tech Impact, Alyssa shares that it is the people and the culture that Tech Impact embodies. “The people who work at Tech Impact are passionate about their roles and the work they are doing for the communities we serve. There is massive trust within the organization and a very healthy work-life balance which sometimes is hard to find. Everyone has a place here and diversity and unique perspectives are encouraged.”
