Nonprofit Technology Programs in Washington, D.C.

Tech Impact’s mission-focused initiatives allow us to help nonprofits with significant need but limited resources. We currently conduct two programs in the Washington DC metro area which are underwritten by funders, the Small Nonprofit Transformation Initiative and the Technology Intervention for Community Change. These programs provide nonprofits with technology to operate more effectively and better meet their missions.

The Small Nonprofit Transformation Initiative (SNTI) is targeted at nonprofits with budgets under $1M in Washington D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8 and is funded by several DC area Foundations. These extraordinary organizations provide vital services to those in need but often have very limited resources and little or no technology budget. A small but strategic investment in technology can be transformative for them, helping them to be more efficient, improve staff morale, and increase their ability to deliver on their mission over the long term. The end result is a cost-effective and sustainable technology infrastructure.

There are three stages to the SNTI, with corresponding services provided with each stage.

Short Term Impact: A tactical assessment of an organization’s technology with an opportunity to implement recommendations including, purchase of hardware and software, migration of infrastructure to the cloud, or database development funded by the grant based on the nonprofit’s needs.
Long Term Impact: A more comprehensive strategic assessment in the form of a 3 Year Technology Road-map to address organizational growth and sustainability.
Ongoing Guidance and Support: One Year of IT Support (subsidized at a monthly fixed rate).

Technology Intervention for Community Change

This program is made possible by E*TRADE Bank’s corporate grant program and targets nonprofits which focus on affordable housing, economic development and healthcare across the Greater Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Ten grantees were selected in both 2015 and 2016, to receive a comprehensive technology assessment conducted by Tech Impact’s highly skilled staff. The assessment identified gaps and outlined a road-map for improving tech capacity over the long term. Tech Impact then worked with the grantee to implement one or more of the following solutions:

Infrastructure Upgrade: upgrade of network, workstation, or both depending on client need.
Cloud Migrations: migration of hosted email or document management to Office 365 including hands on training.
Database Implementation: Design and customization of Salesforce followed by user training to meet donor management, case management, or other database needs. Hands on Tech Support including network monitoring and maintenance and help desk services.
