Our Work
The Data Lab creates impact in two primary ways:
We partner with organizations to create data-driven projects.
We develop scalable products that solve sector-wide challenges.
Our Projects
Every organization should have the tools that it needs to tell its story. Our team partners with nonprofit and government organizations to help them utilize their data effectively – helping them think through their own capacity to use data, how to tell data stories, and how to optimize their work to effectively meet their mission.
A Data-Driven Partnership
“We have a wonderfully supportive board that is committed to make data-informed decisions, but we don’t have the expertise or resources on our staff to do that type of work in-house. In order to provide the right data to our board, I knew I had to look for a partner we could trust and had that expertise we were missing, and that was Tech Impact’s Data Lab Team.”
Our Products
The work that we do with our partners drives the products that we build. We believe that there are opportunities to build scalable solutions that impact the social sector more broadly. The Data Lab’s product work is primarily centered on economic mobility, though our work touches other subjects as well.
Career Moves
How do you connect residents looking for new career paths with organizations that provide workforce training? How can funding and investments better align with the needs of the broader workforce community? Tech Impact’s Data Lab and Digital Services division, Message Agency, partnered to develop Career Moves, a platform which connects individuals looking for workforce training with the organizations that provide it, while analyzing key data about the marketplace to workforce development boards.
Benefits Cliffs
When households that rely on state and federal benefits, including programs like SNAP, TANF, Purchase of Care, or housing vouchers, receive a pay raise – it can have a negative effect on their eligibility for these critical programs. A problem known as the “Benefits Cliff”, the Data Lab is building solutions for families to better navigate these challenges by helping them account for these changes and plan accordingly. Opiates Counseling Attrition
Everyday counseling organizations, particularly those dealing with substance abuse issues such as opiates, need to make decisions about how to allocate their resources. Not all individuals that start treatment will complete it. Understanding which individuals are likely to complete treatment and which are not, helps counseling organizations to make decisions about where to allocate resources and how to provide wraparound services for support. The Lab developed a machine-learning powered tool to help counseling organizations make those choices. [Project in progress]
